The Bennett Harris Blues Band is among the liveliest, funkiest, and most energetic roots bands active in the New York City area. Music lovers are delighting to the sounds of this taut unit of engaging musicians. Their eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary blues provides gritty nourishment for the soul and spirit; audiences keep boogying up a dance storm!
Bennett Harris leads the quartet with his exuberant singing and guitar picking. His enthusiasm is contagious, as he belts out blues tunes with a vocal gusto often reminiscent of Bessie Smith's boisterous manner. A kinetic, spirited performer, he trades off vocals with searing blues harmonica. Bennett's guitar work encompasses a broad stylistic range, evoking the ragtime fingerpicking of Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Blake, Delta bottleneck slide style ala Robert Johnson and Bonnie Raitt, string bending indebted to B.B. King, as well as vintage wah-wah sounds echoing the ghost of Jimi Hendrix and Hot Tuna.
The solid cornerstone of this band is Gary Brooks (aka "Mr. Groove"); Gary maintains a fluid, soulful, pulsing R&B bottom groove on Fender bass, playfully underpinning each tune's chromatic variations. Locking in gracefully with the band's drummer, this rhythm section is full of surprising nuance and textures. The quartet is rounded out by electric lead guitar, a rotating band seat variously occupied by Frank Christian, Dan Hovey or David Phelps. Each is a brilliant and individual stylist. The playing is emotional and truly compelling; spontaneous eruptions of applause explode from thrilled listeners throughout the show.
The band repertoire covers a wide span of the American blues/R&B idiom, as well as original tunes. This amalgam of traditional and contemporary song styles is unified under an umbrella of funky, good-time groove music. The Bennett Harris Blues Band really rocks the house, and a great time is sure to be had by all!
